Welcome To I-SCMA
Welcome to the Inter-State Circulation Managers Association website. Our organization has been meeting for the past 92 years at various locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Every year we strive to enrich circulators with new ways to grow circulation and create new revenue streams.
Some of the topics that we touched on at previous conferences were audience development, retention and customer service, the Internet and circulation, independent contractors, revenue streams to help the bottom line, and ABC updates. We currently have 60 associate memberships and over 300 members supporting our organization. I-SCMA continues the task of helping new and old circulators with the tools and ideas they need to succeed. I-SCMA circulators are the best group of circulation people willing to share new ideas, success stories, and failures.
Our 93rd annual conference will be held in Pittsburgh on October 10th, 11th, & 12th, 2010. Our 1st Vice President Bridget Vilenica is working on creating a great line up of topics and speakers since our last conference. We will be updating our site as the program develops.

In support of NAA's ongoing efforts to recognize the finest newspaper carriers in the country, we have posted the entry form on our web site. (Download Form) "The NAA Carrier of the Year Awards program has a rich tradition of enhancing the value of local carrier recognition programs. This annual competition identifies newspaper carriers with outstanding achievement at the local, regional and national levels. Three age groups are recognized: youth (up to age 18), adult (age 19-54) and senior (age 55 and older). All newspaper carriers with at least one year of service are encouraged to enter. Carriers are judged based on a number of criteria, including route management, personal/scholastic/community service, and letters of recommendation. Entrants, who must be affiliated with an NAA member newspaper, submit an entry form, including a letter of recommendation from their newspaper and supporting materials. Many include endorsements from subscribers on the route. Entrants are judged on this form, which includes questions relating to route management and scholastic achievement/community service, as well as miscellaneous other personal information such as other awards and recognition received. One finalist in each age group at each newspaper is chosen to be forwarded to the appropriate sectional organization, which in turn selects and forwards a finalist in each category to NAA for final judging by a panel of industry leaders. Although sponsored by NAA, this program is made possible by the volunteers from NAA's Circulation Federation which provides the judges, encourages participation, and works with the individual circulation sectional organizations. They in turn work on the grassroots level and make the program possible. The year's effort is chaired by Jim Puryear, Vice President/Circulation, The News & Observer in Raleigh N.C." |

We are proud to bring you several of the presentations made at the 2009 annual conference in Camp Hill at the Radisson Penn Harris' conference center. Please right click on the following links and select "Save As" or "Save Link As" to download the presentations to your computer. A slight glitch has disabled our ability to present the material for viewing online, and will be corrected as soon as possible. Don Waterman, Senior Vice President of Print and Distribution for the Dow Jones Local Media Group, spoke about new structures for a new business. You can download Don's presentation here. Margaret Kaplow, Educational Services Manager for The Washington Post, spoke in detail about how she and her team transitioned their local teachers over to an e-Replica edition. The educational presentation she makes to educators can be found here. The business program concluded with a very interesting program by Bob Davis, managing partner of Surpass. Entitled "How to help your customer service team get more saves, sell more EZ-Pay, and sell other services," was specifically requested to appear online. Here you go. Tuesday's sessions focused on the future of newspaper auditing, and featured a panel with Michael K. Moran, ABC Executive Vice President of Audit Services, Mark Stoecklin, President of CAC, and Rich Murphy, BPA's Senior Vice President of Auditing. Presentations are available here for Mr. Moran and Mr. Murphy. Following the three-member panel, I-SCMA President Dick DeHaven and The Washington Post's David Dadisman provided publisher and advertiser perspective on auditing. Mr. Dadisman's presentation is available here. |

ABC Announces Audit Fast Track |
"Beginning with March 2009 audits, ABC is launching Audit Fast Track, a new initiative that revamps the circulation audit model by shifting the physical location of the field auditor away from the publisher’s office to an off-site location managed by ABC. Under the Audit Fast Track timeline, the vast majority of ABC’s more than 2,200 U.S. and Canadian circulation audits will be conducted away from the publisher’s office by September 2010."
